The capital of (South) Korea is one of the largest cities in the world with almost 10 million inhabitants. At the same time, the capital is also the center of South Korea in issues such as finance, culture and education. It was the capital of the then Kingdom of Baekje over 2000 years ago, which makes the long historical and cultural past clear. The city is located in the north-west of the country, less than 100 kilometers south of the North Korean border. The Hangang River flows through the city and flows into the sea further west. The city was also built on several small mountains, there are also many mountains with small villages and Buddhist monasteries outside the city.
Sights in the city during the day
There are five large palaces in the capital of South Korea. These are arguably the most famous and popular sights in the city. The palaces are reminiscent of a typical Asian architectural style and are several centuries old. Especially the Gyeongbokgung Palace and the Deoksugung Palace must definitely be visited when visiting the city. You will be immediately impressed by the sight of these buildings. If you want to get an overview of the city of lights from above, you should visit the Seoul Tower. This tower is the landmark of the skyline of the capital. After taking an elevator, you are over 237 meters above the ground. In good weather, almost the entire city can be observed from above. A grandiose view over the entire city and also over the mountains in the area awaits you. If you want to experience real Korean culture up close, you should take a look around the Insa-Dong district. Foreigners can discover the traditional Korean way of life here; including Korean food, Korean tea culture and numerous beautiful shops and boutiques with souvenirs and antiques. In order not to get lost in all the narrow streets, it helps to pick up a free map at one of the tourist information offices. To get some peace after all the noise and loud traffic in the evening, you can visit Jamsil Hangang Park. It lies between two bridges on the south side of the Hangang River and is perfect for relaxing. Here you can do sports, just relax, or, if you want, you can even try windsurfing or kite surfing in the river. A visit to the park is also recommended in the evening at sunset. The sight when the sun sets over the river is breathtakingly beautiful. If you still haven’t got enough rest from all the noise, you should go to the Bukhansan National Park. This is only a few kilometers away from Seoul, but looks like a completely different world. Here you can hike along the countless hiking trails and marvel at the extraordinary nature in Korea. Particularly impressive: spring, when the plants and trees start to bloom and everything starts to flourish. Between the mountains you can always find beautiful temples and monasteries.
The city of lights at night
The capital in South Korea never sleeps, night turns into day. Foreigners in particular could be surprised by the locals’ willingness to party. But at night you can not only celebrate in the capital, but also marvel at the beautiful lights. If you want to turn night into day and finally want to really party again, you can visit the city’s university district, Hongae. In addition to numerous artists’ shops and restaurants, there is no boredom at night with the city’s coolest bars and clubs. Here people dance and sing along until late at night. Even if you are not a party person, you can spend the night in the city somewhere other than in bed. From the N Seoul Tower, the city can also be admired at night. The city lights are beautiful and can be admired from here. Alternatively, you can look out over the city from the nearby mountains and hills.
