On the one hand, Hamburg is the port city in the north of Germany, which is considered to be the central location for ship traffic in the area of import and export of goods. On the other hand, Hamburg is also the green north of Germany. Hardly any other metropolis in Germany has as many green spaces as the port city.
Relaxation in the middle of the city center – Planten un Blomen
Probably the largest and best-known freely accessible park in Hamburg is Planten un Blomen. The large park extends over 45 hectares across the city center. Planten un Blomen is more than just a park. Rather, it is a recreation area in the middle of the hectic city. The extensive green areas are interrupted by several lakes and ponds as well as beautifully designed flower beds. A botanical garden and various plant showhouses are also part of Planten un Blomen. In the summer months, various events, such as concerts or the water games in the evening, take place in the complex. The park is also well attended in the winter months, as the roller-skating rink is then transformed into an ice-skating rink. Planten un Blomen is therefore worth a visit at any time of the year.
Art meets nature – Antonipark
The design of the Antonipark goes back to a citizens’ initiative from 1994. The goal was to make the St. Pauli district more sustainable and greener. Above all, many artists contributed their ideas, so that several green areas were created in the middle of a built-up district. With the “Park Fiction” project, art found its way into public space for the first time. Art no longer only takes on the function of design here, but is also intended to convey a message. The park in Antonistraße in the Altona district extends over only one hectare. But visitors can expect special design ideas, such as the “flying carpet”, the “tulip field”, the “tea garden with the palm trees” or a dog meadow with poodle figures. Overall, the park looks less like that, but more like a green oasis in the middle of a lively district.
The Hamburg City Park
The city park in the north of Hamburg was built around 1901. It was supposed to compensate for the factory landscape of that time and green the port city. Probably the largest park in the city extends over an area of 150 hectares. In addition to large sunbathing areas, there are also sports and play areas, so that the park can be used in a variety of ways. The highlight is the large Stadtparksee, which is particularly suitable for cooling off, especially in summer. Ornamental gardens and plant discounts should of course not be missing. Everywhere in the park you can see beautifully planted beds with colorful flowers. The park is also used for various kinds of cultural events in the summer months. The open-air stage and the planetarium are the ideal venues for this. A tour of Hamburg’s city park also reveals many different sculptures. So it is worthwhile to walk all the paths once.
The island park
Another park was created in the city as part of the international garden show in 2013. With the island park, the city gains a recreational area of 100 hectares. The area was redesigned after the garden show and released for general use as a parking area. This created a new recreational area in the Wilhelmsburg district. Unlike in other parks in the city, the Inselpark not only offers sunbathing areas and playgrounds, but also a high ropes course and a canoe canal. Even today there are still some “remains” of the garden show from 2013 to be discovered in the Inselpark. These include, for example, the plant containers, the playgrounds and some gardens. The island park is considered a special oasis south of the city center of the metropolis.
Hamburg is not only a very green federal state, but also a green city. It offers a good mix of big city life and quiet zones. Relaxation can also be found in the middle of the city with a walk through one of the many parks.
